Photographs from Gotland by Gerárd Franceschi Silkeborg Kunstmuseum In 1961 Asger Jorn engaged the French photographer Gerard Franceschi to take photographs for him for a series of books on Nordic art in ancient times and the Middle Ages. The same year he founded the “Scandinavian Institute for Comparative Vandalism” which was meant to shed new light on Scandinavian culture in the Migration and Viking periods. Some of the work was done on Gotland, of which Jorn was very fond. In this context the island takes on significance by virtue of the diversity of its links beyond the Baltic with large parts of Europe.
